A Primer on Peak Oil

September 29th, 2009

The Oil Drum is a fantastic website in the Peak Oil niche. Their authors are very intelligent on their topics, and the information provided is truly top notch. However, a great deal of their articles assume an audience that is relatively well versed in the energy field.

I thought I would share this post as it is based on a presentation which may be a better intro for those less well educated on energy matters. You can see clearly that the world is a supply crunch when it comes to oil consumption. There simply isn’t much room for give in supply and we currently have some slack only from demand. If you assume that there is about a 4 million barrel a day surplus you can quickly decided that it will not take long for an economic rebound to usurp that surplus.

Furthermore, the U.S. only produces about half of the oil that it did in 1970. This trend (depletion of production) can be seen elsewhere in there world (especially in places like Mexico). I suggest reading this post from the Oil Drum as a primer to understanding the challenges that the world faces.

Military Style Aprehension at G20

September 25th, 2009

A protestor at the G20 Summit was apprehended by several men in military style BDU’s the video, found on you, was linked to by the DrudgeReport saying something to the effect of a military arrest. After looking at the video I notice that while these men are wearing BDU’s, they are of varying camo patterns. One does seem to be a standard military pattern, but at least one other man has a more Vietnam era camo pattern. I also notice that their boots differ. While the driver seems to have desert combat boots the others have straight black boots. None off the men are wearing any kind of cover of helmet. It also does not seems easy to identify any patches on the uniforms.

I am just going to put this out there. I won’t enter into any lengthy diatribes.

Census Worker Hung

September 23rd, 2009

A Census worker was found dead and hanging in a National Forest in Arkansas. The man had the word “Fed” etched into his body. For the time being the FBI is trying to decipher whether this was a homocide or a suicide. The victim was 51 years old.

This is an absolute tragedy. I am going to assume that this was not a suicide. I can certainly understand discontent with government, but this simply goes to far. Murdering an innocent, working man. I don’t think I have anything else to say.

Get Your Bumper Sticker Here.

I just had to add this Bumper Sticker because I saw it on a car recently. I have to admit that I have always felt like Obama would be a decent President for Foreign Policy. However, his domestic policy has turned out even worse than I ever could have imagined. So here is the “I was Anti Obama Before it was Cool” Bumper Sticker. I sure thought it was a nice touch. And I intend to add many more of these as time goes on.

Cindy’s Back.

Cindy Sheehan is back. No kidding. And this time she is right outside of Obama’s vacation spot.

I have to give her credit, she believes in something. And doesn’t let partisan politics fool her. So good for her for proving that her stance isn’t purely political, it is a true heartfelt ideological position.

That said. I don’t necessarily agree with her. I am a realist and sometimes war is necessary. As much as I loathe Obama’s domestic policies, I always thought that he would be the most logical on foreign policy. He really has been nothing but status quo to that end. And that is partly a function of international realities being unavoidable. Sometimes you have to bomb stuff.

Who cares about the Post Office?

I think it would be kind of unique to send out wedding invitations by Evite. It’s something different, and no one would expect it. Surely your friends would be talking, and you would probably get responses a lot faster.

Or maybe someone could start a service similar to Evite, specifically for wedding invitations. The invite could link directly to your registries, and easily link people to local hotels.

Just one easy solution to show that we really don’t need the post office anymore. The USPS is planning on closing down several hundred branch offices, and I really don’t see why we would need them anyway. Fed-Ex and UPS are solvent. I can get a post box at several other places, and stamps are easy to sell automatically. Drop off boxes work just fine for me, but I mostly email and work electronically anyway.

So get rid of those post offices. They are just a burden on the national budget anyway.
