Bailing out the Newspaper

March 24th, 2009

A bill has been introduced by Ben Cardin which would allow newspapers to reform as non-profit corporations. I have to admit that I tired of the bailouts. If something doesn’t work, it should die. It is time now to be creative in finding solutions to the issues that we face. Bailing everything out is not the solution.

In my opinion a smart newspaper would take this opportunity to go entirely online, and maintain only a Sunday Print edition. Still, reforming as non-profits doesn’t sound like a terrible solution. My concern is that there would some unintended consequences here which I have yet to of thought of.

Short the Dollar.

The Fed pumped out a trillion and it boosted stocks. The next day the markets wised up and gold moved up 6%. It won’t be long now that we start to hear talk of inflation.

You can’t just make money appear out of thin air. We will be paying for this mistake for the next decade. My money would be with commodites. Gold, silver, iron, oil. I would short the Dollar.

Grading Performance.

Economists gave Obama and Geithner failing grades in a confidence poll. Both received F’s from a panel of 49 economists in a Wall Street Journal forcasting survey. On scales ranging up to 100 points, Obama received a 59, while Geithner received a 51.

MSNBC conducted a poll asking for respondents to grade the Presidential performance thus far. The poll, which had over 160,000 responses asked individuals to grade Obama from “A” to “F”. An overwhelming majority of 59% voted “F”, While 20% voted “A”.

A personal opinion:

Tightening of the belt is the only responsible fiscal policy from the executive and legislative brances. Pooring on debt with baseless currency will only lead to larger problems. Taxing industry and individuals will discourage growth. We cannot hinder the very vehicles that are needed for economic rebound.

Leadership isn’t born in endless policy and debate. Leadership is addressing issues with a nation boldly and bluntly. Confronting those issues and reassuring the masses. When London was being relentlessly shelled Churchill reassured the masses of the British spirit to resist and overcome. We need a Churchill.

Petition Obama to read “Economics for Dummies”. We are sending copies to both Obama and Geithner.

It’s shorter than the stimulus bill, so they shouldn’t have a problem.

Ice Taking Over Michigan.. Send Gore

March 10th, 2009

Ice, moving at 40 feet per hour, is jumping sea walls and crashing into homes in Michigan. The invasion is originating from glaciers in Lake Huron, and not even dry land seems to be stopping it.

Piles as large as homes have to be removed with construction equipment, and homes are being evacuated.

Maybe Nancy will give Al Gore a lift up to Michigan on one of those Military planes. They won’t even have to land, just a fly by will do.

Utah is Addicted to Porn

File this in Society. Utah leads the nation in per capita porn.

mormon_womanIt’s a study from Harvard. Must be all those Mormons with their fancy underwear. The trends tend to peak in more sexually repressed/socially conservative areas. The lowest subscriptions goes to Montana. I guess they have better things to do keep them busy.

Mormons are good people. Maybe a little strange, but good people overall.

Pelosi: Jet Fuel and Latte Liberalism

Nancy Pelosi and I have something in common. We both have an appreciation for Gulfstream V aircraft. For those of you who don’t know, a GV (aka G5) has at least a $45 million dollar price tag. It is a luxury liner of private jets, and is by no means the most efficient private aircraft. I have to say that I have never really comprehended how someone with a green populist agenda can justify constant air travel in an extremely inefficient aircraft. The bottom line is that this plane is more than you need for air travel. Think of it as driving a stretch Hummer Limo across the state when all you need is a Camry.

So now everyone will hammer on Pelosi for being hypocritical and what not. And that is fine, I agree. I would fly Gulfstreams all day long, but then again I don’t chastise others over things like the climate and golden parachutes.

Unfortunately for Nancy, this bad PR storm is made uglier by the outrageous words chosen by an aide. An aide whom I am sure will take the fall for this. Kay King organized the travel plans for the Speaker and was little harsh in her expressions of frustration when particular planes were not available for Pelosi. She basically sounded like a spoiled brat. And I know the kind in D.C. These are the peripheral aides who feel so emboldened by their proximity to power that they look down upon others and treat people as though they are below them. It is rather sad really.

There is a Kay King who is on an advisory board at BYU who has a resume that would suggest that she is the infamous aide. It seems that sometime in the last 14 days (my bet is today) BYU removed King’s bio. The bio states that King received a promotion from Pelosi to run the office and organize travel. So my money is on them being one and the same.

Below is a copy of part of the Bio that Brigham Young University felt it should remove, the link to the cached version is here:

Dr. Kay King has worked for the U.S. Congress since 1984. In March 2007 she was appointed by Speaker Nancy Pelosi to be the Director of the Office of Interparliamentary Affairs for the U.S. House of Representatives. Focusing on U.S. relations with foreign governments, she coordinates the Speaker’s meetings with foreign dignitaries and assists Members of the House of Representatives with official international travel and parliamentary exchanges.

From January 2001 – March 14, 2007 she served as the Democratic Senior Policy Advisor for the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and Chairman Tom Lantos. She worked for Lantos from 1984-1991 and from 1995 to March 2007.
