Parking Meter Revolution

March 25th, 2009

NY is really getting uncontrollable with taxes, but Illinois isn’t far behind. Even though parking meters in Chicago are not city property anymore, the tickets which arise from them are. A New York company paid Chicago $1.2 billion for a 75 year lease on there city parking meters. That company recently increased their rates, and one hour of parking now costs about 3 dollars.

That’s 12 quarters for one hour of parking. Who carries 12 quarters? Apparently most in Chicago don’t, because people are becoming so angry that they are breaking, jamming, and vandalizing the meters. It’s basically a Tea Party of sorts, and it’s a beautiful thing. My hope would be that damages done bite in to revenues created. It is good that people can stand up and say when they have had enough.

These parking meters are a municipal item by extension only, but they are utilized by folks that pay taxes for these streets and the police that ticket them. They pay sales taxes, and income taxes. They are facing tax hikes. Taxed to death.

Our government is becoming a burden. An overbearing tax happy circus of a burden to its citizens.
