Sexting is BS.

March 24th, 2009

Have you heard about this family campaigning against “sexting”. It’s about one of the most asinine news stories of 2009. The family was motivated after their daughter commited suicide because of ridicule she faced from having sent out nude photographs on her phone.

I will say now, that this is a tragedy. I feel for the mother and father, and wish they did not have to deal with terrible loss.

Now on to the absurd.

After her daughter had been called a slut and a whore, etc., the mother said she was just “devastated by these parents that allow their children to do and say anything they want”. This is coming from a mother whose daughter sent nude photos of herself to a short term boyfriend. A critical factor here is that her daughter was 18 years old. She was legally an adult. So now the parents want some sort of laws in place? What kind of laws? How will they be enforced? Would their daughter have been the person to violate such a law. Certainly the liability lies with the person who sends, and not the one who simply receives.

But I digress. So in lieu of lawmaking they’ll probably start a few non-profits, and give talks at High Shools nationwide about the dangers of “sexting”. DANGERS of SEXTING, give me a break. Everything is dangerous then; kissing, screwing, getting caught cheating. EVERYTHING. Teen hoopla will never end.

They will call this “sexting” a national epidemic, and wait for their Barbara Walters interview. It is not an epidemic. That is bullshit. I am not very far removed from the young community, and I know it is not a epidemic. What is an epidemic is you not teaching your daughter some self respecting and the high degree probability that she is a slut.

This is what I would call BMM. That’s a bored mom magnet. The media picks up on a story of a pretty white girl tragically dying. It conveniently has a titilating word in the title: “sexting”. So the story runs and all the bored white, middle class, moms feel threatened by the “epidemic”. After all, they saw it on Good Morning America.

Here are some general rules of thumb:

  • If your daughter is under 18 and has MySpace she is probably a whore.
  • If she only has facebook you are probably doing ok.
  • The boys these days don’t expect nude photo’s by cell phone, that’s just your daughter being a whore.
  • When your daughter is a whore, don’t go around blaming everyone else.
