Fairness Doctrine May Help Conservatives
Enacting a fairness doctrine may actually help conservatives. The argument on the liberal side really boils down to there being a “Conservative Media Conspiracy”, and that liberal stations are being forced off the airwaves by malicious radio companies. An idea of bringing back the fairness doctrine is backed up by the flimsy debate that airwaves are a public good, and essentially should be socialized. What about television media? Or print Media. I believe that studies would show those to have a decidedly liberal bias. So then, why not let the liberals have their fair air time, conservatives will simply have to request equal broadcast and print representation. So in exchange for some demanded radio time, the conservative cause could be greatly boosted by more exposure on the 24 hour networks.Don’t get me wrong, I still completely disagree with the fairness doctrine. It is a legislative cop-out for whiners; cloaked in a name that is easily palatable by the masses. Yes I am one of those crazy kooks who believes in the free market, and if you don’t have advertisers your radio show won’t work. It’s simple economics really. Think critically about what the liberals are asking the government to do. They want the federal government to demand from private companies an equal share of air time be given to less profitable ventures. If I owned a fruit stand that sold apples for a good profit, but avoided the profit losses of oranges, I would be upset when the government demanded that I halve my fruit stand into a profitless orange venture. Would the government subsidize my oranges? Would they give me a larger fruit stand?
