As oil prices continue to reach new highs politicians are feeling a strain not only on the economy, but also from their constituency. Surely the monetary adjustments being made by the citizens will fuel reactions in Congress and else. With experience from the oil embargo, the options for containing prices and fears at a governmental level are still limited. Candidates have highlighted several options from windfall taxes to repealing federal taxes on gasoline.

These solutions lack any real substance for impact, and certainly do not address the problem. Perhaps a more realistic concept would be to promote telecommuting. Working from home could certainly help in a variety of ways.

  • Consumers could save on their gasoline budgets.
  • A growing commuter culture is stressing gasoline demands
  • Corporate Tax incentives would be attractive to industries able to support telecommuting.
  • It certainly is a green step.

We certainly have the infrastructure and technology to support this. Companies would save in a variety of ways by cutting down on space requirements. It is time to rework corporate culture to compensate according to productivity.

For most of the 2000’s the common knowledge was that the baby boomers would soon be heading into retirement - and all that that implies. A wise investor would look for ways to exploit the aging population and all the money that they would bring. The obvious solutions ran from pharmaceuticals to retirement communities. Perhaps a wiser approach would be to look for less common investments. Either way, the opportunities abounded.

Perhaps now those investments would be overvalued. The bandwagon has been overloaded, and the moves were made early. If you compound this idea with the fact that disposable income may be tightening with inflation and higher costs across the board, there may be real opportunity in “shorting old people”. I bet the major retirement community conglomerates raised to much capital, and took on a lot of investors. But will it really be an attractive option to stick grandma in a retirement home when her retirement account shrinks in terms of real value?

cockroach.jpgHere is an interesting analogy: emails are like cockroaches.

  • They never die
  • They multiply like crazy (forwarding)
  • They always pop up at inopportune times

When you are speaking to someone you always try to be as careful as you possibly can; especially with attorneys. But text, especially in electronic form, never goes away and is simply indisputable.

So you are watching MTV on your Plasma and hear this new song that is perfect for your workout. You hop on your computer, download the song, and put it on your I-Pod. Your cell phone is dead so you have to charge it before you go to the gym and listen to your song. Like every other machine at the gym you are watching the news (in captions) and jamming to your I-Pod. You get home and zap some food in the microwave, call your friend, and talk about your vacation that is a 6 hour drive from home.Energy Crises.
