Short Old People

May 20th, 2008

For most of the 2000′s the common knowledge was that the baby boomers would soon be heading into retirement – and all that that implies. A wise investor would look for ways to exploit the aging population and all the money that they would bring. The obvious solutions ran from pharmaceuticals to retirement communities. Perhaps a wiser approach would be to look for less common investments. Either way, the opportunities abounded.

Perhaps now those investments would be overvalued. The bandwagon has been overloaded, and the moves were made early. If you compound this idea with the fact that disposable income may be tightening with inflation and higher costs across the board, there may be real opportunity in “shorting old people”. I bet the major retirement community conglomerates raised to much capital, and took on a lot of investors. But will it really be an attractive option to stick grandma in a retirement home when her retirement account shrinks in terms of real value?
